 Jenq-Tay Yuan
Brief biography

Jenq-Tay Yuan (袁正泰) was born in Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C., on September 9, 1957. He received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, in 1981. After completing his military service, in 1984 he went to the United States where he became a Christian and learned how to independently conduct academic research. He received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees under the supervision of Dr. Darrow Dawson and Dr. John A. Stuller, both in electrical engineering, from the University of Missouri – Rolla, Rolla, Missouri, U.S.A., in 1986 and 1991, respectively. From 1985 to 1991, he was a Teaching and Research assistant with the University of Missouri – Rolla. From 1992 to 1993, he was a system engineer in the Formosa Plastics Corporation, Point Comfort, Texas, U.S.A. He joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, Fu Jen Catholic University, in 1993 as an Associate Professor, and was granted with full Professorship starting February 2001.

His research interests have been centered on the area of statistical and adaptive signal processing and their application to communication systems. His major academic contributions in the past ten years are in the field of adaptive signal processing. Specifically, he almost single-handedly developed computationally efficient and numerically stable smoothing (or two-sided filtering) as well as interpolation (or two-sided prediction) algorithms in lattice structure. These developed algorithms not only generalize the extensively used one-sided filtering and one-sided prediction lattice algorithms, but also have potential implications for communication, signal processing, and estimation problems. These developed algorithms can be useful tools for channel equalization and estimation, data compression, coding and restoration of speech and image, and even for narrowband interference suppression in spread spectrum communication systems. The results of the paper by Jenq-Tay Yuan, "QR-Decomposition-Based Least-squares Lattice Interpolators," IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Vol 48, No.1, January, 2000, pp. 70-79 and the paper by Jenq-Tay Yuan, and John A. Stuller, "Least Squares Order-Recursive Lattice Smoothers," published in IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Vol 43, No.5, May 1995, pp. 1058-1067 are significant and are therefore cited and briefly discussed in the most widely known textbook “Adaptive Filter Theory” by Simon Haykin (Englewood Cliffs, Pretence Hall) in the adaptive signal processing field (see pp. 695 and pp. 976 of  ed. and pp. 911 of  ed.). His current research interests are blind (unsupervised) equalization and applying the previously developed interpolation lattice algorithms to narrow-band interference suppression in the direct sequence CDMA Systems.
